About You

Have you shopped around for treatment of a difficult condition?

South Australian Sports Medicine Centre has a broad range of physiotherapy services including conditions not commonly treated.

Neck/Back Pain

There are many practitioners who treat some aspects of neck and back pain.  We base our treatment on a comprehensive examination and take a biomechanical holistic approach.  Our treatment includes manual therapy, massage, dry needling and individual exercise programs.  These programs can be done at home or supervised in our well equipped pilates studio and gymnasium.  We also use real time ultrasound and other biofeedback methods to re-train specific muscles such as the transversus abominus. The research has shown that this is essential for re-training lumbopelvic stability.  The research has shown an individual exercise programme prescribed by a physiotherapist  is more effected than general exercise although keeping active and exercising is important for most types of back and neck pain.

Pelvis

If your problem isn't quite back pain and not quite hip pain then you should have your pelvis checked.  Jim, Andrew, Matt and Daniel have training in the assessment and treatment of dysfunctions and instabilities of the pelvis.  This is often an important component that is missed in treating the lumbar/pelvic hip region.

Groin/Hip

The physiotherapists at South Australia Sports Medicine Centre are experienced in management of difficult problems in this area eg - osteitis pubis, adductor and lower abdominal strains and tendinopathies, hip labral tears and impingements.  Again an individual exercise programme is essential for managing all these problems.  We work closely with sports doctors and physicians to come to a more accurate diagnosis for these problems.

 Knees

Andrew Clarkson has considerable experience and expertise in the management of the difficult post-operative and early degenerative knees.  Many of these problems are not well managed and result in ongoing pain swelling, disability and repeat surgery.  We have full gym facilities for rehabilitation of knee injuries and take a biomechanical approach to the overuse problems such as runners knee (patellofemoral maltracking).  EMG biofeedback is used to re-educate muscle function with these problems.

 Feet

Our resident podiatrist Chris Walker is a recognised expert in foot biomechanics and makes great orthotics himself in his laboratory at 70 South Terrace.  Jim lecutres on feet at the University of South Australia and our physios take a biomechancial approach and actively rehabilitate sprains, strains and overuse problems such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles problems, shin splints and foot pain.  The physios and Chris work closely together to manage these problems.

Temporo-Manibular Joint, Neck and Headaches

Lynne Haysmann is Adleaide's leading physiotherapist in the management of TMJ problems which are also closely related to neck problems and cervicogenic headaches.  Lynne also does traditional acupuncture.  The physios at SASMC are trained in specific exercises for the cervical spine as well as taking a manual therapy and soft tissue approach.

Hands and Elbows

Helen Burfiled is one of a small number of post graduate trained hand therapists in Adelaide.  She sees all our tricky hand patients and makes her own splints and braces in the managemnet of all manner of wrist and hand problems.  She works closely with Jim in a program that we have developed for tennis elbow.  This program also works well for golfers elbow and other overuse problems of the elbow and forearm.

Rib Cage

This is a badly neglected area in the mangement of musculoskeletal problems.  Jim, Andrew, Matt and Daniel all have training and expertise in assessing and managing dysfunctions in the thoracic spine and rib cage as well as teaching specific stabilising exercise techniques.
